Supercritical Carbon Dioxide in Life Science Applications

Dec 16, 2025 | Design Specification

Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂) is CO₂ held above its critical temperature (31.1 °C) and critical pressure (7.38 MPa), where it behaves as both a liquid and a gas. That unique state gives it solvent power like a liquid but with the penetration and diffusivity of a gas. Because of that, it has become an important clean-process technology in biotech, pharma, food and medical devices.

This is becoming a growth area for me within the Life Sciences sector and I’ve been involved with three UK projects over the last 12 months. Two centralised bulk delivery systems, and one manifolded cylinder system.

My input included:

  • Design specification
  • Feasibility study and feasibility study review
  • Risk assessment
  • Written Scheme of examination
  • Final system review and operational recommendations
